Launch of U15 Catterfly Cup

May 12, 2022 | 2022

Saturday 14 May 2022 sees a first for Junior cricket in Switzerland – the launch of a league! To date, all organised competition between the clubs has been in the form of weekend tournaments and friendlies. The time constraints of weekend events do not allow for much longer-form cricket than T20, and so players do not get much experience of playing longer matches. This is critical as upcoming tours will see a mix of T20 and 50-over matches for the age group.

The U15 Catterfly Cup (named after the Swiss Juniors title sponsor, Catterfly) is a 30 over competition with four teams – Basel Dragons, Gingins, Swiss Romande (Cossonay and GRYCC) and Zurich Crickets – and will be played over the summer with home and away fixtures, giving each team 6 matches. If it goes well, the concept will be rolled out to other age groups in 2023.

Michael Hall, Youth Development Officer for Cricket Switzerland, said “The Catterfly Cup is an exciting step forward for junior cricket in the country. The distances between clubs don’t make it easy but I hope this competition will take off and give our players much needed extra competitive cricket.”

The competition kicks off in Basel with Basel Dragons hosting Zurich Crickets and Gingins in a double header. It promises to be a fantastic, competitive and exciting start to the outdoor season!
