Net Run Rate
Net Run Rate (NRR) is Cricket Switzerland’s preferred method of differentiating between teams tied on the same number of points in multi-team ODI, 40 over & Twenty20 league.
A team’s net run rate is calculated by deducting from the average runs per over scored by that team throughout the competition, the average runs per over scored against that team throughout the competition.
In the event of a team being all out in less than its full quota of overs, the calculation of its net run rate shall be based on the full quota of overs to which it would have been entitled and not on the number of overs in which the team was dismissed.
Only those matches where results are achieved will count for the purpose of net run rate calculations.
As an example we have taken Berne’s net run-rate in the 2014 Mr Pickwick Cup. Berne’s listing in the Western Group points table published in the group stages was as follows:

The columns we are looking at here are the last three: “Net-RR”, “For” and “Against”. The figure in the “Net-RR” column is achieved by subtracting the answer of the division in the “Against” column from the answer to the division in the “For” column.
To use this example:
In the tournament Berne CC scored:
- Against Cossonay CC 85-5 (17.4 overs)
- Against Uprising CC 156-4 (20 overs)
- Against Swiss Colts 161-7 (20 overs)
- Against Geneva XI Stars CC 136-3 (17.4 overs)
Across the four games, Berne CC scored 538 runs in a total of 74 overs and 8 balls (74.8), a rate of 7.192 (strictly speaking it’s 75.2 & 7.154 rpo but for the benefit of our calculations we use a strict decimal).
Teams opposing Berne CC scored:
- Cossonay 82-9 (20 overs)
- Uprising 33-ao (14.2 overs)
- Colts 52-9 (20 overs)
- Geneva XI Stars 135-6 (20 overs)
In the case of Berne CC & Uprising CC, because Uprising CC were all out before their allotted 20 overs expired, the run rate is calculated as if they had scored their runs over the full 20 overs (+5.4 overs).
Therefore, the run-rate scored against Berne CC across the four games is calculated on the basis of 302 runs in a total of 20 + 20 + 20 + 20 = 80 overs, a rate of 302/80 or 3.775 rpo.
