Women’s Cricket
History
Women’s cricket has been on Cricket Switzerland’s agenda since 2014, marked by the appointment of successive Women’s Development Officers. The creation of Zurich Sapphires in 2016 was a game-changer, attracting players from across eastern Switzerland and achieving success on the field.
From 2016 to 2018, Zurich Sapphires led the charge, even forming a national team that triumphed in Austria. However, 2019 saw a decline in activity due to various challenges, and the COVID-19 pandemic further restricted opportunities.
Since 2021, women’s cricket in Switzerland has been revitalized, thanks to a new Women’s Cricket Committee and Switzerland’s readmission to the ICC. In 2022, teams from Basel, Wettingen, Cossonay, and Bern were in action.
In 2023, the inaugural Cricket Switzerland Women’s League (CSWL) season kicked off with five teams competing in the league. Building on this success, a CSWL Indoor season followed in the winter, and both leagues continued to grow.
In 2024, Cricket Switzerland made history by selecting its first-ever women’s national squad.

Our captain. 🫡
Rivals on the pitch, but after the game is done, nothing but love and encouragement for the other side.
@cossonaycricketclub and national team captain, Danashi Medagoda, took a moment to share some words with @embrachcricket. True leadership, on and off the field.
