The match was delayed 15 minutes to give the dew and fog a chance to give way to unbroken late summer sunshine that shone all day.

Swiss Afghan won the toss and, hoping to the better of the conditions, put Zurich Lions in to bat. Despite some tight bowling from Swiss Afghan, Zurich Lions played sensibly and steady, building innings and partnerships and taking lots of singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Lions opener Kanishk Shah led the way with a hard earned 44.

The Lions captain Senthil Lakshmanan (46) steadied the middle order with a score just shy of 50.

Every Lions batsman contributed to a good score of 170 off their allotted 40 overs, a score according to locals, which was above par.

The Swiss Afghan opener’s task ahead was a little over 4 runs an over.

That became just that little more difficult after losing both openers cheaply.

A lot rested on the shoulders of the Swiss Afghan all round star Bilal Muhammad. And he gave Swiss Afghan some hope with a great score of 43, before being caught by the Lions captain Senthil Lakshmanan off the bowling of Mayur Daftari, ending the Swiss Afghan innings 64 runs short.

In his closing speech, Cricket Switzerland President, Ale Mackay, said “today there were only winners as both teams had won promotion to the CSPL next season”.

He thanked the Basel CC team for the infrastructure, John Hallam for the live streaming, the officials and SD Kitchen for the tasty lunch.

Onesimus Koilraj (umpire) awarded the runners-up medals to the Swiss Afghan team, Jay Singh (umpire) the winners medals to the Zurich Lions team and Nasir Mahmood awarded the Man of the Match trophy to the Zurich Lions captain Senthil Lakshmanan for the highest individual score of the day with the bat & a sublime catch.

Finally Alex Mackay awarded the winning trophy to Zurich Lions.
