Embrach, 15 March 2026 — The Cricket Switzerland U19 national squad gathered in Embrach, just outside Zurich, for a first full day of outdoor training that offered plenty of encouraging signs for the season ahead.

Fitness gains turning heads

One of the standout takeaways from the session was the clear improvement in fitness across the squad. Players arrived well-prepared, and it showed. Several athletes pushed through to the highest levels of the beep test, with a few even hitting the ultimate benchmark. It’s safe to say Head Coach Jonty may now need to rethink how to raise the bar further—an excellent problem to have at this stage of their preparation.

Technique and rhythm returning

Beyond fitness, there was a noticeable sharpness in skills. Batters displayed confident shot selection and timing, while bowlers maintained mostly disciplined lines and lengths. Fielding drills were executed with energy and precision. After the winter break, players appear to be rediscovering their rhythm quickly, a testament to both their individual commitment and the structure of the programme.

A day of two weathers

Conditions were something of a mixed bag. While the sun made frequent appearances, bringing a welcome touch of warmth, periods of cloud cover quickly reminded everyone that early spring in Switzerland can still bite. Parents supporting from the sidelines braved the chill admirably, though many found refuge in the nearby cafeteria during the colder spells.

Bonus time on the field

A late change in the senior men’s team schedule turned into an unexpected bonus for the U19s. With extended access to the ground, the squad trained well into the afternoon. The players embraced the extra time, focusing on refining specific aspects of their game—an opportunity particularly valuable with an important tour just around the corner.

Eyes on Italy

This session marked the final outdoor preparation before the squad travels to Padua, Italy, for a series of long-format matches against the Italian U19 national team over the Easter long weekend. The additional training time in Embrach could prove crucial as the players transition into match conditions.

Coach’s watchful eye

Throughout the day, Head Coach Jonty remained deeply engaged, taking many detailed notes and closely observing performances. His ongoing assessments will no doubt play a key role in shaping selections and individual development plans as the pathway progresses.

What’s next

The squad now shifts indoors for their next session, solely dedicated to fielding techniques and strategies, scheduled for 21 March 2026 in Basel. With momentum building and confidence growing, the U19 pathway group looks well-positioned for the challenges ahead.
