Cricket Switzerland Announces New Umpiring Qualification Pathway with ICC

Jan 30, 2024 | 2024, Cricket Switzerland News, Umpire Courses

Cricket Switzerland, in collaboration with the International Cricket Council (ICC), is excited to announce a significant development in the training and qualification of cricket umpires. This initiative aligns with our continuous effort to enhance the standards of cricket officiating in Switzerland.

Introduction of ICC Online Umpire Courses

The ICC has officially launched its Level 1 Umpire Course on the EdApp platform(https://www.edapp.com/icc/). This course is part of the new ICC umpire qualification pathway, which replaces the previous ECB ACO Stage structure.

The pathway includes:

  • ICC Umpire Foundation Course (online) – Introduction
  • ICC Umpire Level One (online) – Equivalent to Stage One
  • ICC Umpire Level One (face-to-face) – Equivalent to Stage Two
  • ICC Umpire Level Two (online) – Equivalent to Stage Three
  • ICC Umpire Level Two (face-to-face) – Equivalent to Stage Four

(Note: Face-to-face courses are not available online)

Free Access and Certification Process

Access to the EdApp platform and the courses is free, and there is a certification process upon completion of all courses. Umpires are encouraged to sign up and complete the foundation course as a starting point. Completion of the ICC Level 1 course will be mandatory for officiating in any Cricket Switzerland recognized games in 2024.

Course Structure and Benefits

The online courses provide comprehensive training, enhancing the understanding of cricket laws and boosting confidence in umpiring at various levels. The Level One online course, available this winter, will be followed by a face-to-face course prepared by Jay Singh & Alex Mackay, expected to be ready by March 2024.

Minimum Umpire Qualification Requirements

To umpire organized Cricket Switzerland league matches at specific levels, umpires must meet certain qualification requirements based on the new ICC umpire pathway.

Prioritization Criteria for Training

Given the large number of registered umpires (153 with swissFOCUS), a prioritization criterion has been established for the Level One face-to-face course, focusing on neutral umpires, CSPL team members, and those with significant umpiring experience.

Plan for Face-to-Face Courses

swissFOCUS plans to run four ICC Level One face-to-face courses in March & April 2024, subject to budget, aiming to qualify over 50 umpires by the start of the 2024 season.
